What is Pilates?
The Pilates Method of training was developed over 90 years ago by Joseph Pilates to strengthen and tone the muxcles. Pilates was a sickly child, plagued by rickets, and asthma, but his method sprang from his determination to strengthen his frail body. Joseph referred to his method as "Controlology" or muscle control, which highlighted his unique approach of using the mind to match the muscle.
Pilates based conditioning facilitates the development of lean, elongated muscles and functional movement that relates directly to an activity or sport. Through accurate practice and alignment, deep breathing is coordinated with each movement encouraging abdomoinal support of the spine, torso, and limbs as well as increasing oxygen uptake.
In the words of Joseph Pilates, "A few well-designed movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence, are worth hours of doing sloppy callisthenics or forced contortion"
What will Pilates do for me?
Pilates incresases strength, improves posture, and brings pain-free movement into your life. Both the Mat and Reformer exercises are designed to strengthen the core of your body, and within a few classes you will be able to feel your everyday movements being initiated increasingly from our center. Pilates also teaches coordination, lubricates the joints, and increases flexibility. Pilates, especially when performed on the machines, helps women to keep their bone density high even into menopause.
Mind/Body, and more
"The mind itself builds the body," Joseph Pilates once said. Any successful athlete would agree. In sports, the "zone" describes this mind-body connection. By emphasizing complete concentration, proper breathing and correct spinal and pelvic alignment, Pilates Fitness trains you to integrate mind and body in every session. Pilates is referred to as the "science of control." It is a non impact form of exercise that can be used by anyone.
